Virginia, December 24: In a recent incident, the Pentagon confirmed that an Iranian drone was responsible for hitting a Japanese-owned and Netherlands-operated chemical tanker, the motor vessel CHEM PLUTO, near India’s coast. The attack occurred approximately 200 nautical miles southwest of Veraval in India.

Details of the Attack

The chemical tanker, MV Chem Pluto, with a crew of around 20 Indians, was targeted by a one-way attack drone fired from Iran in the Indian Ocean. Fortunately, there were no reported casualties, according to Indian military sources and a maritime security agency.

Escorted Passage to Mumbai

After conducting damage assessment and repairs on its power generation systems, the vessel set course for Mumbai. However, due to steering issues, it sought escort assistance. The Indian Coast Guard Ship Vikram will be accompanying the ship during its passage, with the Indian Coast Guard Operations Centre closely monitoring the situation.

Response by Indian Navy

Responding to the incident, the Indian Navy dispatched a frontline warship to aid the merchant ship. This event unfolds amidst heightened tensions, with Iran-backed Houthi rebels increasing attacks on ships in the Red Sea amid the Israel-Hamas conflict.

Ongoing Monitoring

The situation continues to be monitored closely, reflecting the collaborative efforts of various maritime security agencies to ensure the safety of the vessel and its crew.
